Does Macklemore deserve the “Hype”?
At the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, Macklemore sparked controversy when he swept the Rap category winning ‘Best Rap performance’, ‘Best Rap Song’, and ‘Best Rap Album of the Year’ over the excepted winner, Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick’s album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, was lauded by both critics and fans alike. He became the most talked about man in hip hop after he dropped his “Control” verse calling out majority of his competitors. Kendrick Lamar is known for his lyricism which is why it struck masses of people when he didn’t receive one Rap-based Grammy award. While Macklemore is known for being a radio sensation with his hits “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us”, his music does not capture the essence of Rap and versatility as Kendrick’s does. On the other hand, Macklemore is perceived as a hard working artist who very well deserves those Grammy awards. In response to all of the tension, Macklemore uploaded an Instagram picture which read that he felt Kendrick was “robbed”. Kendrick responded by simply saying that Macklemore’s win was “well deserved” and “everything happens for a reason”.
There were many different responses from fans about this controversy. Even Drake responded by saying that Macklemore’s response was “wack”. INHype went out to ask what you thought about the controversy. Do you believe Macklemore deserved the praise, or do you believe that Kendrick was robbed?
