Grounds Improvement
Join E4 Youth staff and community members as we participate in cleaning, organizing, and improving the local outdoor music venue Kenny Dorham’s Backyard.
Day 2: January 20, 2025 10 AM – 12:30 PM
Community Engagement
Located near the MLK Day Parade route, we’ll have a crew at KD’s capturing your stories about “What do you miss about East Austin?” and sharing them on social media and a special community mural.
About This Event

What: To honor Dr. Martin L. King Jr.’s legacy and vision of a Beloved Community, E4 Youth is hosting a two-day Service & Learning Project at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard in East Austin’s African American Cultural Heritage District. This initiative aligns with Dr. King’s question, “What are you doing for others?” by fostering community engagement, preserving local history, and improving an essential community space.
Goals:
- Enhance and revitalize the grounds of Kenny Dorham’s Backyard (1106 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702).
- Educate participants on East Austin’s Black history through the What Once Was (WOW) storytelling platform, focusing on the 12th Street corridor.
- Build community connections by highlighting the contributions of Black leaders in East Austin and celebrating Dr. King’s legacy through storytelling and art.
