Media Product Scoring Guide: Producer’s Index & Artistic Merit
Over the next several weeks, students are encouraged to make media products based on MX Essential Concepts. MX Essential Concepts are building blocks for success in the Show Your Reel 2010 Contest. Since, the new Show Your Reel competition is team oriented, making and scoring your media products is a good way for you to find out what type of media you’re good at while learning important info. In January, students will form advertising teams or Ad Squads.
So, we encourage you to experiment as you work through the key terms and concepts.
Media Products are scored on a 5 point scale (1 being the lowest, 5 the highest) in 2 categories – the Producer’s Index and Artistic Merit.
Your media products should reflect that you are an active producer in that you can take information and use it to create something new and hopefully relevant. In short, you use media to solve problems. That’s what Media Xperiments is all about. Each of the products listed on the outer part of Bloom’s Taxonomy Wheel can be made using multi-media as a blog, podcast, song, chart, survey, video, etc. For instance, if you were to write a song about the Scientific Method, that would represent Synthesis on the wheel. So, your Producer’s Index score would be a 5. Depending on the quality or Artistic Merit of the song, let’s say it is a 3, your overall score on that media product would be a 4.
Artistic merit is a little more difficult to measure in that it’s based on feelings and perceptions i.e. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” However, it plays an important role in how people receive your message. So, your media product will be judged on that as well.
Look for Media Protege podcasts each week that will announce the winning mash ups and the next week’s key term or concept.
