E4 Youth Industry Tour Series: GSD&M

E4 Youth kicked their Industry Tour Series off with a visit to GSD&M, the largest agency in Austin, TX. 15 talented students from Manor High School’s media program attended. The student’s interests ranged from production to project management.

Katie McClure led a very informative tour sharing background information about the founders of GSD&M and discussing the core values the agency adamantly upholds.

Mid-way through the tour of the facility we sat down in the reel room to watch GSD&M’s most recent work and have a candid discussion on the industry and how to prepare for it. The students left with several key takeaways:

-Presentation is essential: Constantly get feedback on your work, resume and website.

-Step outside of your comfort zone: Network, network, NETWORK, especially if you want to freelance.

-Advertising isn’t a 9-5 industry: You have to be prepared to put in the extra time and go the extra mile to get your projects completed.

-Enter your work in competitions: One of the best ways to get recognized by creative recruiters and directors is to enter your work in industry award shows.

After completing the tour many of the students are now eager to get started with E4 Youth’s sponsored workshops this spring!

If you are a media-based company and would like to host a tour please send an email detailing your interest to Candace Queen, tours@e4youth.org
