Austin-area all-star youth group, Legacy ATX, releases EP and performs with members of the Grammy winning band Grupo Fantasma at A Night with E4 Youth.
“The future of music in Austin is in good hands” says Jonathan “Chaka” Mahone of Riders Against the Storm (3X Austin Band of the Year) and the project’s producer. “These young musicians really bring it. We’ve got rappers working with jazz instrumentalists, beat makers working with R&B vocalists and a Latin Grammy award winning rhythm section. I’m blown away by all this talent.”
Legacy ATX is the result of the Music Legacy Project, a weekly series of song writing and history workshops led by Chaka Mahone. “Our goal was to provide students with a sense of history as well as a good overview of the production process” says Carl Settles, Founder/Executive Director of E4 Youth. “Students have not only written and recorded music with Grammy Award winning musicians, they’ve heard from local historians, worked with advertising professionals to document and promote the project through videos, blogs and social media. Even the CD artwork was designed in collaboration with mentors at the ad agency McGarrah Jessee”.
“When Carl talked to me about the project, I thought it was a great opportunity to give back but also for our students at The Recording Conservatory of Austin to gain some valuable experience” says Greg Gonzalez, Grupo Fantasma bassist and TRCoA instructor. “I’m really impressed with both their song writing skills and musicianship. We’ll be hearing from these young musicians in the years to come”.
