Help Us Build the E4 Virtual Archive (E4VA) of East Austin Oral Histories

The E4VA, pronounced “Eva”, will serve as a virtual archive of oral histories that will allow both new and long term residents, tourists and people in their homes all over the world, gain a better sense of Austin’s vanishing past.

As part of the Austin Impact Accelerator, we are all aware of the forces of gentrification in our city. Long term residents of Austin’s Eastern Crescent, many who have resided there for generations, are being pushed out of their homes by rapidly escalating property taxes. Many times, those homes are being populated by recent transplants from places like Silicon Valley where a 2 bed, 1 bath, 1000 sq ft home for $500K, is the steal of the century.

The Hillside Farmacy which is described on Google as an “Antique-chic eatery in a historic building for thoughtfully sourced eclectic fare, plus groceries” was an actual pharmacy that was owned by black folks before integration. ( http://www.thisistheplaceiwastellingyouabout.com)

They love hanging out at funky nouveaux East Austin spots like Quickie Pickie and the Hillside Farmacy. They are not evil people. Many of them would tell you that they are “progressives”. But, unless they take the initiative to do some significant research, they will never really understand why Ms. Jones, who has lived in the house across the street for decades, gives them the side eye every time they take Fluffy for a walk.

This is a large part of why our Digital Docents are building the E4 Virtual Archive (E4VA). E4VA, pronounced “Eva”, will serve as a virtual archive of oral histories that will allow both new and long term residents, tourists and people in their homes all over the world, gain a better sense of Austin’s vanishing past.

We need coaches and volunteers in audio video production, immersive media, coding, social media and event planning.

The archive will contain video and audio interviews, transcriptions, written articles, still images and links to related content. It will also serve as source material for immersive storytelling experiences that users can access by pointing their phones at wayfinding signs that will be placed throughout the city as well as via web browsers and VR headsets.

We need volunteers.
