First trailer of the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO released!

A thousand years before the rise of Darth Vader… There was the Old Republic.

Now I’m not a big fan of subscription MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games that require a fee to play monthly), mostly because… well… I have to pay to play. But… this has to be one of the best video game trailers I’ve seen in a long… long time.

“Republic leaders have traveled to Alderaan to engage in promised peace talks with the Sith Empire. The most powerful Jedi have accompanied them to safeguard against an Imperial deception. The Empire’s real motive, however, was simply to lure the Republic’s strongest defenders away from Coruscant and set the stage for an audacious attack. Under the command of Lord Angral, the Sith fleet approaches the Republic’s capital planet for the first time in centuries. In advance of the fleet, the strongest Sith Warriors have flown a stolen Republic ship into Coruscant’s orbit. Their mission is critical – to destroy the planet’s defense grid mainframe hidden in the heart of the Jedi Temple.”

This game company called Bioware is developing it if I remember correctly. They have an office in here in Austin. The award winning game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as well as its sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, were also developed by Bioware (they also developed well-received games such as Jade Empire and Mass Effect). With this history of great games (as well as the beautiful screenshots on the site), I’m looking forward to a trial of this particular game.

But how is this relevant to me? Well, it just so happens that ever since I’ve played Final Fantasy VIII on the original Playstation when I was a wee kid, I’ve wanted to make 3D cinematics like that trailer. It’s an excellent piece of work (and actually had me on the edge of my seat) and I want to be a part of something like that in the future (despite my lack of experience and knowledge in 3D modeling).
