As I wrote about earlier, E4 Youth has been going through our annual evaluation process. Our bread and butter programming is Get Creative Enrichment Clubs — trained college age Creative Mentors are custom paired with high school Career and Technology Education teachers to help students learn employability skills and ultimately build quality digital portfolios that can aid in college and career opportunities.

Based on the strength of their portfolios, high school students earn access to industry events, laptops, software, recording gear and ultimately job shadow and internship opportunities with our ecosystem professional coaches and mentors throughout Austin’s creative, technology and entrepreneurial sectors.

During the 2018–2019 school year, E4 Youth served 193 students in 9 high schools throughout Austin, Manor and Pflugerville, TX. This past summer, we employed 16 of these high school and college students. Two of these teams worked with award winning ad agencies GSD&M and McGarrah Jessee to create and pitch campaigns for Pizza Hut and Lyft while the others worked with the Permanent Legacy Foundation to complete a UX design project and the award winning film production company Rabbit Foot Studios to produce a short film on youth civic engagement.

Additional Highlights

  • 10 students and teachers earned access to attend the 2019 South By Southwest Interactive and Film Festival.
  • 30 students volunteered at our local American Advertising Federation Awards show, where they got an up-close look at award-winning work and networked with Austin’s finest creative professionals.
  • Club participants’ work was celebrated as part of E4 Youth’s Annual Showcase & Awards show in May. All students received certificates of completion. The most outstanding students received valuable prizes including laptops, cameras, software and other digital tools.
  • Get Creative Enrichment Club enrollment grew by over 20% while also nearly doubling the percentage of quality portfolios created by our students to 47%.
